Grand Opening Ceremony of Tirana International Airport Nene Terreza, Albania
21st March 2007

Point of intersection in Southeastern Europe: Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza

Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza is the most important hub of transportation in Albania and the country's only international airport. In 2005, it was used by close on 785,000 passengers, 22 percent more than in the previous year. Since the 1990s, the airport has been developing positively, with above-average growth in passenger numbers.

Since April 23, 2005, operational responsibility for the management of the airport has been in the hands of the newly established airport company Tirana International Airport SHPK (TIA). This follows the conclusion of the privatization agreement in October 2004. Within the framework of a BOOT concession, TIA will run the airport up to 2025. It has set itself the twin goals of optimizing the operation of the new airport and making it into one of Albania's most modern infrastructure facilities. The aim is to provide passengers and airlines alike smooth, reliable, first-class service.

The airport of Tirana is getting a face-lift. The key project is the new passenger terminal, designed to be able to handle up to one million passengers a year. It will go into operation in March 2007. In terms of performance and functionality and also in respect of of its architecture, the new terminal sets standards for Albania and is thus making its own special contribution to the way the capital city is changing.
